It's Earth Day. So could you knock off the recycling already? It's making things worse.
Some national recycling experts have begun calling for government restraint in trash recycling, which can be more costly and environmentally damaging than dumping.
"We just assume recycling is always better," said J. Winston Porter, president of the Waste Policy Center, an environmental consulting and policy organization. "But there's a point at which you shouldn't just recycle for recycling's sake."
Porter's probably some flack who works for the garbage industry, throws litter out of speeding Hummers, leaves the lights on day and night, right? Try: former EPA administrator who helped set the first nationwide recycling targets for the entire federal government.
His warning comes none too soon. "Break down boxes for recycling bin" just got taken off today's to-do list.
